Sometimes the gripper assembly can be freed up by a little heat and a lot of
oil - but it is best to completely disassemble it, degrease and clean it and
re-assemble. There is a spiral spring steel pin in the turnover cam that
needs to be punched out. With this out the whole thing comes to bits. Take a
note of the orientation of the turnover cam relative to the gripper arm
before disassembly - you don't want to re-assemble it twice!
Lubrication, and the type of lubricant to use, is a sensitive topic! I would
say any light grease that will not solidify in the long term should be OK
for the motor worm wheel.
Best of luck with it!
Adrian.

Subject: [Jukebox-list] Advice for cleaning Rockola 1493 Gripper Assembly
I recently acquired a 1493 out here in the SF Bay Area and this is my first
jukebox project. I picked this one because I have a small place and this
machine has a small footprint. Anyways, it is currently not working and I
am in the process of restoring it. Currently I am trying to clean the
frozen/gummed up gripper assembly. I hear that this a common problem with
Rockolas that have sat around for a while. What is the best procedure or
method for cleaning one of these assemblies? I thought about completely
disassembling the gripper parts and degreasing them but I can't seem to
determine where to start. The owner's manual has an exploded diagram but
doesn't really help much with determining how to dismantle it.
Additionally, the record carousel drive motor was also gummed up and
frozen. I cleaned the motor and the plastic drive gear but I'm not sure what
to relube the old gear with. Will white lithium grease be sufficient ?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff
