[Jukebox-list] Animation Units

Jim, you really took a chance posting such radical views like this! I felt like a lynch mob was going to be coming after me soon. 

Anyway, I've got a Seeburg DS, and I thought I'd try putting animation into that instead (in the grill area). The mech is not very visible, and the shape is not so classic, so a little colour changing might liven it up. The original styling and lighting is kinda boring.

Don't worry guys, I won't butcher it up, and what ever I do will be "reversible". :+)

Awww Mike - you caved! I happened to like your idea, especially since it would be "reversible". Wouldn't it be a bland world if everything was the same? It's not like the Seeburg R is on an endangered list or something - there are thousands of those boxes out there. A little personal touch wouldn't hurt one bit.

Who made David the authority on which boxes we can modify or which ones we can't? The 70's are part of history, too. Light up kits and WICO conversion kits are part of history as well.

It's OK to listen to advice, but make your own decision. That's what I do, once I clear it with my wife :).

David, thanks for your kind polite way of expressing your thoughts.

Yes, I agree that we are "stewarts" of these pieces of history. We've
seen many examples of butchered boxes, and other items.

My original intent was to put a revolving drum animation unit in the R ,
but make it so that it can be "undone" with no damage to the box.
However, I have had second thoughts, in part due to the feedback on the
forum, and I'll just leave it the way it was originally designed.

Yes, the R is truly one of the great jukebox classic designs of all
time.

Designers use several methods of providing diversity within a product
line. One is using different ornamentation for what are basicaly the
same product (worked for GM for years).
Since I made my last post on this subject, I've read through and seem
that others have voiced my concerns (I'm catching up on my email). I own
quite a few old mechanical devices besides jukeboxes. Old telephone
equipment, pinball machines, wind up phonographs, old cameras, etc. A
great part of collecting things from the past is stewardship -
preserving those things for the future, for both entertainment and
education.  I think originality is a virtue, especially with a
significant machine like this one.  There are lots of machines from the
70s and 80 floating around out there that you could reconfigure at will
(and wow, I've seen some real beaut's on Ebay :-)  ) and nobody would
raise an eyebrow, but the R is  landmark design.  I guess it would be
kind of like taking a 59 Cadillac and putting bucket seats and a DVD
player in it. It isn't respectful of that object's place in history as
an icon.

I hope I haven't said anything to hurt your feelings. I'm not trying to
lecture you, just explain my belief that there is virtue in historic
preservation and originality.  All my best.
