If he has "yellow needles", he may have a stereo Pickering cartridge (or
even a mono 345-03D, which is supposed to have green needles, but yellow
will fit).  He should look at the pictures of various cartridges on eBay and
see if there is one that looks like his.  New needles would be a good place
to start when the history of the ones he already has is unknown.
