Thanks to all who responded. I no longer have the thump but am not sure what
I did to fix it. When I first went through the machine it had lots of little
"pops" when selecting plus a noisy volume control. I made two modifications
I saw in an old issue of AJ - adding a resistor in the amp plus a resistor
and capacitor inside the volume control. What a difference, but I still had
this thump which varied in volume from barely noticeable to a huge thump
that drowned out the music for an instant. I wondered if the mute relay was
somehow being activated at the same time. No way you say, but this machine
does goofy things sometimes if things are not just right. So I pulled the
amp and removed the bottom plate to watch. I didn't see the relay move a
bit, so I put everything back. Now I no longer have the thump. My guess is
that I didn't have a good connection at the AVC socket or one of the wires
on the terminal strip. I'm still amazed at the sound from this little dinky
amp.
