Converts AC to DC.  AC in your audio circuit would,
obviously, cause hum.

Could be gassy - that means a small leak that lets air in.
It's normal for a tube to build up a silvery coating on the
inside of the envelope, but not white.  Luckily, almost
every tube sircuit uses a 5U4 rectifier, so it's a common
and inexpensive tube that's still being produced.
