G'day,
If you have an AMI Continental Mech there is a brass bush about 1 inch long 
with a small ball bearing inside of it.   This often gets lost when the 
tonearm is lifted or removed from that "vertical tube" you mention.
If you have the Continental 2 Manuel look in the parts section part F-8935 
AMI referred to it as "bearing assembly"     Victory Glass have them so does 
Oliver Stamann in Germany.
