Visa did start as BankAmericard. I had a Midwest Bank Card which evolved
into Master Charge and then MasterCard. I also had a Diners Card - which
still exists but are not a factor in the market. Diners actually started the
universal charge card business and then slept through the boom in the charge
card business. Few people realize that Visa and MasterCard do not and never
have issued charge cards. They are franchises that license banks and credit
unions to issue the cards and provide the interchange system so issuers get
debited and acquirers get credited.
