Mimeographs were dead by the time I was in school. We had
"ditto" machines that used a kind of heavy carbon paper to
make a master, which was wetted with a solvent that would
make a type of offset copy, usually purple, when pressed
against paper. A freind and I edited a pseudo-underground
6th grade newspaper (which the teachers were all too happy
to close down when a levy failed) and I can still remember
the chemical-sweet smell of the ditto fluid as I ran off
the copies. Being mechanically inclined, I figured out in
a minute how to operate the machine during recess, so the
TA's didn't have to do the work - another thing that
kept us afloat a little longer than we would have been.
Ah, the counterculture free speech world of 1970... :-)
