Did you check the fuses? AMI's of this vintage are notorious for having
crumbling wiring. I just worked on a D80 which had a bad cable from the
junction box to the mech on/off switch - the outside jacket looked good, but
two of the the four conductors inside had shorted together. If the fuses are
OK, check the reversing relay. When either the tonearm cancel switch or the
one on the junction box is made, the reversing relay should pull in. Is this
happening? If so, you have either dirty contacts on the relay, broken wiring
from the relay to the motor, a bad motor, or a frozen/jammed gripper. If
not, you have dirty contacts at either cancel switch (doubtful, but
possible) or a problem in the wiring from the cancel switch to the relay.
Push the relay by hand to see if it cancels - if so this tells you the
motor, DC power, and gripper is OK. Good luck,
Jim

I have an AMI D40 that is stuck playing a record and won't cancel, I know
rhis is a fairly basic machine so I must be overlooking something simple,
