[Jukebox-list] Rock-Ola 445 does not remove the record

Karl,
On guys like that, I'd like to find a product better at "gumming up the works", however "WD" usually works just fine.
I did not mention it, as you were talking about the Rowe CD gripper assembly, but, in my opinion, you are correct--metal to metal always needs lubrication--metal to "plastic",may need lubrication--"Plastic" to "Plastic", almost never.
I think that the "marketing depts." of WurliTzer, Rock-ola, and Rowe were responsible for the lackof a good "lubrication guide". They all must have seen the guide published by Seeburg, and said (to themselves?), let's not do it and point out that our JB needs less maintinance then Seeburg's. Rowe went so far as to claim that they only needed oil, "every 5 years". I have seen a lot of "locked-up" transfer and scan motors on less then 5 year old Rowe JB's. I have also seen a lot of older Rowe motors with worn-out bearings.
One other thing about "droping the CD's ----all over the cabinet bottom". On the RoweAMi's equipped with a CDM-3, the CD clamp arm sometimes will touch the CD as it's being returned to the basket. This causes the CD to either fall out of the gripper, or to be mis-aligned with the basket. There are two "cures" for this problem. One is for your "friend" that started this chain of thought. Just "bend" the aluminum clamp arm out of the way (this will last for a while, depending on how much you bend it!). The second correct way, is to remove the clamp arm and the "steel" acuator arm. Use a vice to hold the steel portion, and "reform" it, very slightly (it won't "bend" back !). Use caution so that you don't destroy the spring. Ron Rich

  Ron,
Oh I agree that they're supposed to be dry (Rowe gripper bow assy). I should
have made a distinction between lubed and cleaned. I sorta consider gummed
up as the same problem whether it's from old grease/oil or from
nicotine/dust/etc. The only real difference is whether you lube it or not
after you clean it. Over the years I have noticed that although it's not set
in concrete, in absence of an accurate lube chart, a good rule of thumb is
that modern equipment requires lubrication at points of metal on metal or
metal on plastic (I use the word plastic loosely meaning synthetics of
various kinds) moving contact points. Wherever the manufacturer has opted
for plastic on plastic, usually the parts are slick enough that no lube is
required and adding it just invites troublesome buildup. I've gotten by in a
hurry in a customer's busy location with customers ready to drink elsewhere
because of an out of order jukebox by a shot of WD40 but I followed it up by
disassembly and cleaning, leaving it dry the next day. Once though, a
customer decided he'd paid me enough for my 11pm call and figured I was
trying to gouge him suggesting a proper repair later. To the best of my
knowledge, that shot of WD40 and a little working back and forth is still
holding up for him and it's been over a year. Kinda pisses me off because
I'm sure by now he's convinced I was yanking him around. He's the kinda guy
who will try to fix future problems with a shot of WD40 and make things
worse, so it'll come out in the wash. He'll shoot WD40 on the player. I
can't wait......hehehe.
