Hi Jackie,
great surprize finding those "free" 78's! One of the reasons they sound fine 
on thr trashcan is that the larger 3 mill stylus rides up high on the 
grooves whereas the modern .7 mill stylus rides way down in the bottom of 
the groove where all of the dirt lives and plays the dirt (so to speak). 
Even if your TT has a 3 mil (78) stylus, the old nail (thumb screw) type 
needles the early jukes used tore the records up. Rick
