It sounds like the clutch is either sticky or mis-adjusted. This is
behind the mech, adjacent to the record rack. There is a pin that runs
through the middle of the vertical clutch shaft. While playing a
record, this pin should be clear of the upper and lower clutch
assemblies. During scan and transfer, the pin couples the motor to the
appropriate mechanism for either moving the carriage or transferring the
record. The pin is probably dragging against one or the other causing
the clicking.
It is probably very gummed up from 50-plus years of old lubricants. To
fix it correctly involves removing, degreasing, and re-lubricating the
mech.

The correct fix here is disassembly and cleaning. Do this in a clean
area over an old white sheet or similar as it is easy to lose the small
contact washers, springs, and pins.
Has the amplifier been serviced recently? If not, the next question
will be about hum, distorted sound, and the expensive smell of burning
transformer.
