Provided that the stylus is inserted properly, and by "the
side of the needle" you mean the edge of the stylus carrier,
the stylus cantilever has become detached from the coil armature.
This seems to be a common mode of failure over time.  Since these
pickups haven't been produced for over 50 years, it's hard
to see how it could be a "new" replacement. :-)  West-Tech
does a very good job rebuilding these.
