Hi Roy,

Have you determined if the problem is the trip activating or a sticky
clutch/trip assembly?

Follow this process:

Take the cover off the mechanism and watch the trip solenoid in action.
Normally the plunger snaps up from rest when it reaches the selected
record, then it smothly goes back down as the record is placed into the
clamp position, where it waits for the trip impulse.

Now if your trip solenoid plunger goes down and then snaps up when the
record is clamped then there is a problem with the trip switches or the
record clamp trip (no-record/record wrongly placed switch).

If the solenoid does not go down smoothly and then seems to ride back up
then you have a gummed up mechanism and one starts with taking the
solenoid part and cleaning the sleeve and plunger - then check the
clutch assembly for dried up oil.

One trick I use is to rest my finger on the trip lever arm while the
record is being clamped. If the trip is electrical then the arm is
forced up against my finger as the coil energizes, if the arm is pushing
gently upwards then it is a gummy problem and I check for dried up
grease/oil. Do be careful of the voltages present! A rubber glove would
be a good idea to avoid electrical shocks...
