  I like the #0000 steel wool myself. You must, however, be sure to remove all debris, particularly if you live in a humid environment, to avoid staining fron iron oxide. Any chemical product runs the risk of of adversely affecting the metal, especially with an unknown quantity like German smelters of alum. Have had good luck with this and "Mother's Mag Polish" from auto parts stores, or even cheap "whitening" toothpaste. To quote Frank Zappa, rub with a circular motion. Peace, Psychedelic Steve
